Zakin Estate was founded in 1998 when Jon, a technology investor from Chicago, and Dr. Jan Zakin, an OB-GYN from Hawaii, acquired a remarkable 150-acre southwest-facing property in St. Helena on Howell Mountain. Drawn by the site’s rugged beauty and exceptional terroir, they planted just four acres of vineyards, producing fewer than 600 cases annually. This intentional small scale allows for a meticulous, hands-on approach to viticulture and winemaking.
The estate’s rocky volcanic soils, combined with excellent sun exposure and natural drainage, create ideal conditions for cultivating small, intensely flavored berries. These elements contribute to wines of structure, balance, and refined concentration that reflect the distinct character of Howell Mountain.
Winemaking is led by renowned vintner Philippe Melka, whose expertise and global reputation elevate Zakin Estate wines to the highest level. Originally from Bordeaux, Melka refined his craft at some of the world’s most prestigious wineries, including Haut-Brion, Petrus, and Dominus. Vineyard management is overseen by Pete Richmond of Silverado Farming, ensuring that each vine is farmed with precision and care.
Zakin Estate wines have earned critical acclaim for their quality and distinction. Notably, the 2019 Estate wine was named among the top 24 wines of the vintage by Antonio Galloni, who remarked that he would proudly include it in his personal cellar alongside iconic producers such as Screaming Eagle, Promontory, and Scarecrow.
